Eight people, including four children, were shot late on Saturday during Fourth of July celebrations in Coney Island, New York. The attack occurred at approximately 22:35 on West 30th Street in Brooklyn, a short distance from the site of an earlier fireworks display for the American national holiday.
According to the Guardian, the wounded include a 33-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest, a 25-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man hit in the shoulder. Two six-year-old boys were struck in the stomach, a seven-year-old boy was hit in the legs or thigh, and two other boys aged 12 and 14 were wounded elsewhere on their bodies.
All victims had been gathered in a residential backyard where a family barbecue was underway. They were taken to hospitals, with seven reported in stable condition. The 21-year-old woman was said to be in critical condition.
Police stated that a handgun and ten shell casings were recovered at the scene, but no arrests had been made. Authorities described the shooter as a man dressed in black wearing a black ski mask who approached a fence, fired multiple rounds into the yard, and fled on foot. There were no indications of any dispute at the barbecue prior to the gunfire.
A recent gang-related homicide had occurred in the neighborhood, though it remained unknown whether the two incidents were connected.
