Bulgarian-Born SWAT Sergeant Critically Wounded During Atlantic City Raid
A 31-year-old police sergeant with Atlantic City's specialized tactical unit sustained grave injuries from gunfire during a Tuesday morning arrest operation. Hristiyan Ivanov, originally from Montana, Bulgaria, was struck while helping execute a search warrant around 3 p.m. on June 2 in the 100 block of North Florida Avenue, according to information published by 24 Chasa.
Ivanov joined the Atlantic City Police Department in 2013. His brother, Ivaylo Ivanov, also serves as an officer in the same department. The sergeant was promoted to his current rank in 2023 and is known among colleagues for his courage, professionalism, and dedication to duty.
During the raid, officers encountered a suspect who opened fire. Ivanov was hit, and a second officer was also injured, though not by life-threatening wounds. The suspected shooter was found dead at the scene, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Atlantic City mayor, Marty Small, confirmed that one of the officers struck by bullets had been near the head of the group during the operation. That officer was wearing a helmet at the time.
Authorities have not released further details about the shooting itself, citing an ongoing investigation. The New Jersey Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is handling the probe, following standard procedures for incidents involving the use of force by law enforcement.
By Tuesday evening, Ivanov remained in the operating room as medical staff worked to stabilize his condition. His family faces significant expenses for treatment, travel, childcare, and other unforeseen difficulties related to his recovery. A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe had collected more than $53,000 toward an $80,000 target.
"He is a devoted husband and loving father to three young children, who now face an uncertain and difficult time," the campaign page states. "Christian put his life on the line to protect others. Now it is our turn to support him."
The case has stirred strong feelings among Atlantic City residents and fellow officers, who are calling for Ivanov's full recovery.
