Colombian citizen dies in ICE shooting in Maine
A young man from Colombia aged 26 perished during an enforcement action conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Biddeford, Maine. Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero had spent roughly three years living in the United States before the fatal encounter on July 15, 2026.
The Foreign Ministry of Colombia released an official communication the same day, expressing strong disapproval of the lethal outcome and demanding that American officials carry out a swift and comprehensive inquiry to determine exactly what transpired. The diplomatic body also conveyed sympathies to the bereaved relatives.
According to a family member, the deceased had taken steps to normalize his migratory and employment situation upon arrival in the North American nation. His uncle, Wilson Guerrero, told Caracol Radio that the young man had secured the permits required to hold a job and had never faced detention or removal orders.
An eyewitness account from a nearby resident, Daniel Boucher, offered additional context. Boucher told La FM that he heard sounds resembling fireworks shortly after 7:00 a.m. and then observed a white automobile being chased by an official vehicle. He said agents pulled the driver out and placed him on the ground. Boucher noticed the man's abdomen still moving, suggesting respiration, but said the motion eventually ceased.
The bystander further recounted that the Colombian uttered something to the effect of having attempted to halt his vehicle. When Boucher questioned the officer who discharged his weapon, the agent reportedly claimed the motorist had tried to strike him with the car.
American homeland security officials stated that ICE personnel were monitoring a non-citizen subject to a deportation order, without naming the target. Separate accounts indicate the agents may have been seeking a different person linked to the property.
Colombia's embassy in Washington and its consular office in Boston have remained in touch with local authorities and the victim's relatives, providing ongoing consular support. Citing privacy rules and the active legal proceedings, the Foreign Ministry declined to share further particulars.
Relatives have organized an online fundraiser to pay for legal representation, burial services, and returning the body to Colombia. Contributions have surpassed USD 310,000.
