Mexico Demands U.S. State Attorneys General Investigate ICE-Linked Deaths

The Mexican government has formally asked state attorneys general across the United States to open criminal inquiries into cases where Mexican migrants died while held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or during agency operations.

The request follows the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant killed by an ICE agent in Houston. According to figures released by Mexican authorities, 17 Mexican nationals have died during immigration enforcement actions since the start of President Donald Trump's second term. Of those deaths, 14 occurred while the individuals were in ICE custody, and three happened during agency operations in the field.

The Mexican government's appeal marks a significant diplomatic pressure point as tensions surrounding U.S. immigration policy continue to escalate. Each death involving a Mexican citizen under ICE supervision or during enforcement actions is now being pushed for independent criminal review at the state level.
