Man Gunned Down at Vega Baja Beach During San Juan Night Festivities
A young man lost his life to gunfire early Wednesday at a popular beach in Vega Baja while revelers marked the annual Noche de San Juan, authorities confirmed.
The fatal shooting unfolded around 2:34 a.m. near the boat ramp at Puerto Nuevo beach along Highway PR-692, according to Primera Hora. Someone dialed the island's 9-1-1 emergency line to report violence in the area, where security personnel had reportedly been present.
The victim was identified as Jeremy Santiago Mañón, age 22, who lived in the same municipality where he was killed.
Detectives working the case believe a physical altercation broke out at the gathering and spiraled into deadly violence. Crime scene technicians collected more than two dozen spent bullet casings as evidence.
Santiago Mañón had a prior run-in with the law. Last year, police arrested and booked him in connection with a domestic violence incident. The final court outcome of that earlier case remains unclear.
Investigators plan to pull surveillance footage from nearby businesses in hopes the cameras captured portions of the deadly confrontation.
Agent Miguel Barreto of the Homicide Division at the Vega Baja office of the Cuerpo de Investigaciones Criminales (CIC) processed the scene alongside prosecutor Alexandra Villamar.
No arrests had been announced as of the initial report.
