Law enforcement in Charlestown took a young motorist into custody early Monday after the individual's vehicle made contact with a police cruiser during an attempted roadside stop.

The episode began around the stroke of midnight, when emergency services fielded a call about an automobile heading the wrong direction on Route 1, entering Charlestown from the South Kingstown direction. The caller indicated the driver was behaving in an unstable manner, according to WJAR.

Patrol units located the suspect vehicle near the junction of Old Post Road and Falcone Lane. When officers moved to halt the car, the operator reportedly reversed into the police automobile. During the confrontation, a single round was discharged from an officer's service weapon. The vehicle was subsequently immobilised.

Troopers from the Rhode Island State Police arrested Jonathan Vasquez, aged 23, who resides on Atwood Avenue in Johnston. He is suspected of operating a vehicle while impaired, marking a first offence, alongside other charges.

Vasquez is scheduled to be brought before magistrates at the Fourth Division District Court to answer the allegations.
