A man riding a CTA bus on Chicago's South Side fought off three attackers during a late-night robbery attempt, cutting them with an object he carried.

Three males who boarded a Chicago Transit Authority bus late Saturday attempted to steal from another rider, but the intended target turned the tables by slashing them with an edged item he had on him, authorities said.

The confrontation occurred around 11:22 p.m. along the 5700 block of South Ashland Avenue. The trio surrounded the male passenger and demanded his belongings. Rather than comply, he produced a blade-like instrument and struck back.

An eyewitness who asked not to appear on camera recounted to ABC7 Chicago that the aggressors robbed the man first, then menaced him with threats of shooting. The victim suffered a laceration on his hand and was driven to a medical facility for care. His condition is stable.

Officers apprehended the three alleged perpetrators not long after the incident. No further information on charges has been made public.
