A wave of firearm attacks swept through Chicago during the July 4th weekend, leaving numerous victims wounded and one person dead, CBS News Chicago reported.

The most serious cluster of violence occurred in West Garfield Park. Shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, bullets flew through a crowd gathered along West Maypole Avenue. Six individuals were hit: an 18-year-old female wounded in her lower body and arm, a 19-year-old male struck in the foot, two 17-year-old boys injured in the leg and neck respectively, a 20-year-old male with wounds across his torso, and an 18-year-old male hit in the leg. Medical personnel transported the group to two separate hospitals, where all were listed in stable condition.

Minutes before that barrage, a teenage girl just blocks away took a single round to her chest. Emergency crews rushed the 17-year-old to Stroger Hospital, where doctors assessed her condition as grave. Detectives had not established by morning whether the two West Side events were linked.

Elsewhere in the city, a 19-year-old pedestrian in Morgan Park became a target around midnight when an unknown individual approached him on foot, produced a handgun, and opened fire repeatedly. The young man arrived at Advocate Christ Medical Center in grave condition. The perpetrator escaped on foot heading north along Ashland Avenue.

In another fatal encounter, authorities found a male victim on the pavement along West Van Buren Street around 1:45 a.m. He had absorbed several bullets. Paramedics conveyed him to Stroger Hospital, where medical staff later pronounced him deceased.

Saturday night also saw a 29-year-old motorist attacked while parked on East 90th Street. A projectile struck him in the thigh around 10:02 p.m., leaving him in serious condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

The Chicago Police Department had bolstered its presence throughout the municipality for the holiday period. By 6:30 a.m. Sunday, investigators had not placed anyone under arrest for any of the attacks.
