Gunfire claimed the life of a 40-year-old motorist on Chicago's Southwest Side during the evening hours of Sunday.

The deadly encounter unfolded close to 7:30 p.m. along the 3800 block of South California Avenue, situated within the Brighton Park community, ABC7 Chicago reported.

According to local law enforcement, the victim remained inside his automobile when an unknown attacker produced a weapon and discharged several rounds in his direction.

Medical crews transported the wounded man to a nearby healthcare centre, where staff were unable to save him. His name has been withheld pending formal identification procedures.

No suspects have been placed under arrest at this stage, and the police probe into the homicide continues.
