An autistic child has died after being hit by a car in Cumberland, Indiana, wibc.com reports. The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 am on Sunday near the intersection of East Washington Street and German Church Road.

Police believe the child had wandered away from home before the collision. A bystander flagged down officers, who found the child lying in the road. Officers performed CPR at the scene before the child was transported to Riley Hospital, where the child later died.

The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene. Investigators from the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department have since been interviewing witnesses and working to obtain any available surveillance footage that could help identify the suspect.
