Authorities in New Jersey have detained two individuals, one of them an elected official, following an investigation into suspected racketeering activities.

John Alite, aged 63 and residing in Englishtown, where he holds a council seat, was apprehended on 19 June. He faces numerous charges tied to an alleged predatory lending operation, as detailed by WRNJ Radio.

Prosecutors contend Alite provided money at rates surpassing what the law allows, then pressured debtors through menacing behaviour to surrender assets and cash. His company, Straightened-Out Entertainment Inc., is said to have been instrumental in facilitating these transactions.

Also taken into custody was Stephen Locrotondo, 67, from Bridgewater Township. He stands accused of conspiracy and collecting interest on loans that breached statutory limits, allegedly working in tandem with Alite.

Attorney General Jennifer Davenport praised the joint efforts of the Division of Criminal Justice and state police that led to the arrests. She stressed her office's commitment to lawful business practices and vowed to prosecute those who exploit others.

DCJ Director Theresa L. Hilton reaffirmed that the pursuit of justice for victims continues even after suspects are in custody. Acting Superintendent Jeanne Hengemuhle of the New Jersey State Police characterised the accusations as an attack on core values of equity and public confidence.

The case centres on claims that the pair enriched themselves through fear, illegal financial dealings and misuse of authority.
