A grand jury in Lake County, Florida has formally charged 44-year-old Shahidul Islam with first-degree murder committed with a gun, and the local prosecutor's office says it will ask for execution.

The panel met on July 8, 2026, and returned an indictment against Islam. He is accused of deliberately killing Monica Islam on May 2, 2025, while carrying and firing a weapon.

Law enforcement officials said the suspect was captured with help from federal agencies after he had escaped to another jurisdiction. He had earlier been removed from the country and later returned without authorization, according to state officials. Following a sentence for unlawful re-entry, he was brought back to face the homicide charge.

Islam is currently jailed at the Lake County Detention Facility with no possibility of release on bond.

State Attorney Bill Gladson said no court case can bring back the deceased or remove the suffering of relatives, but the office will seek the maximum punishment available. Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell highlighted the collaborative work among agencies that resulted in the detention.

Assistant State Attorney Thomas Wieczorek is handling the prosecution. The request for the ultimate penalty was filed under a state law that allows capital sentences in cases of extreme gravity and profound effect on surviving family members.
