A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in Fort Worth, Texas, in the early hours of Sunday, March 15, according to star-telegram.com.

Maverik Parish was identified in court documents as the suspect in the death of Enrique Avila. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at 1900 East Long Ave., according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed by Fort Worth police.

Parish was a passenger in a black 2004 Ford Expedition at the time of the incident. Before the fatal encounter, he had allegedly been firing a tan handgun into the ground multiple times from the vehicle.

Investigators say Avila, who reportedly appeared intoxicated and possibly experiencing a schizophrenic episode, approached the SUV at the intersection of East Long and Schwartz avenues. Witnesses told police he was upset that Parish had been discharging a weapon in the neighborhood.

According to the affidavit, Avila was unarmed and stood on the left side of the vehicle, shouting at Parish through the passenger window. When the driver attempted to reverse and drive around Avila, he moved into the path of the vehicle, forcing it to stop again.

As Avila walked toward the front of the SUV, Parish allegedly extended the tan pistol through the window and fired a single shot. Avila collapsed in a grassy median and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle's occupants initially fled but returned shortly after to check on the victim. Officers from the Real Time Crime Center alerted patrol units, who conducted an investigatory stop in the 2900 block of North Nichols and detained all five people inside the vehicle. Police recovered both a black pistol and the tan pistol in plain view inside the SUV.

The investigating detective noted that no witnesses believed Avila was armed or attempting to assault anyone. The affidavit states that Parish deployed deadly force despite facing no imminent threat.

Parish remains in custody. No bond has been set.
