A 20-year-old shift manager at a McDonald's restaurant in Yuba City, California, suffered severe burns after a co-worker allegedly attacked him with hot oil from a deep fryer. The incident occurred on May 30 at the fast-food location approximately 65 kilometers north of Sacramento.
Jacob Smith was preparing to count money in the office when he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye. He turned, and in the next moment, hot oil struck him, according to his mother Amber Smith, who spoke to American media outlets. The attack left him with burns across his face, neck, right arm, shoulders, and back.
Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, who allegedly fled the scene immediately after the attack. Authorities launched a search operation and arrested him several days later. Bluett currently remains in custody without bail.
Smith has spent more than a week in the intensive care unit at UC Davis Medical Center, where burn specialists are treating him. His family reports that approximately 22 percent of his body sustained damage. Multiple surgeries lie ahead, including skin grafts. The pain is so severe that doctors cannot provide adequate therapy outside the intensive care unit, his mother explained.
The motive for the attack remains unknown, and police continue their investigation. Smith's family says they do not understand why the assault happened. Amber Smith shared a heartbreaking moment on a fundraising page: "As a mother, it broke my heart when he looked at me and asked: 'Why did he do this to me?'"
Despite his injuries, Smith posted on GoFundMe that he holds no anger or resentment. "I am not sad and I am not angry. Pain is part of the recovery process. I am grateful to my family, friends, and doctors. Above all, I am grateful they managed to save my eye," he wrote.
Bluett now faces multiple serious charges, including causing great bodily injury and mayhem. If convicted, he could receive a multi-year prison sentence.
The owner of the Yuba City McDonald's franchise called the incident deeply concerning and stated that the company is cooperating with investigators while supporting the injured employee and his family.
