Eight men charged with terrorism over alleged plot to attack Trump at White House MMA event
The U.S. Department of Justice has announced terrorism and attempted murder charges against eight men accused of conspiring to attack President Donald Trump during a Mixed Martial Arts event held at the White House for his birthday.
The suspects, ranging in age from 19 to 32, allegedly planned to fly explosive-laden unmanned aircraft into the MMA arena to trigger an evacuation. According to the indictment, this would have allowed snipers positioned outside to open fire on officials attending the event.
The alleged targets included the U.S. president, Vice President J.D. Vance, federal officials, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who did not attend the gathering.
Five of the men were arrested on June 16 — days before the June 14 event — in California, Nebraska, and Missouri. Two additional suspects were taken into custody by the FBI later in June, one in Washington state and another in Missouri. An eighth man, 21-year-old Chandler D. Skaggs of West Virginia, was arrested this week and was allegedly assigned the role of a sniper in the plot.
The defendants, who hail from different states, allegedly used online chat groups to coordinate the attack, recruit participants, and encourage carrying out the plan. They are jointly accused of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and conspiracy to assassinate a government official.
The president celebrated his 80th birthday by converting the White House grounds into an MMA arena, with more than 4,000 guests in attendance.
