The city's top police official stated Sunday that a male clad entirely in dark clothing, face covered, approached a boundary fence along a coastal roadway and fired repeatedly into the recreational space before fleeing on foot.
Investigators noted no evidence of any dispute or fight at the gathering prior to the gunfire.
Detectives are exploring potential links to a verified gang-connected killing that occurred on the same street earlier in the week.
A semiautomatic weapon with an oversized ammunition holder was found at the location, along with ten discharged cartridges. The perpetrator remains unidentified and unapprehended.
The neighborhood remained sealed off Sunday morning while forensic work continued. Markers dotted the pavement, and barrier tape blocked access. Children's bicycles lay forgotten nearby.
A neighborhood resident expressed fury about the bloodshed, particularly the harm to young people. She described the scene as heartbreaking, noting the presence of play equipment and youthful belongings, and demanded action to prevent recurrence.
