Widow of Charlie Kirk faces husband's alleged killer in Utah court
Erika Kirk, widow of US conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, came face-to-face with her husband's alleged murderer for the first time in a Utah courtroom on Monday. The case was reported by BBC, among others.
A preliminary hearing was held for 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, during which a judge evaluated whether prosecutors had sufficient evidence to bring the case before a jury. Robinson stands accused of murdering Kirk, and the prosecution is demanding the death penalty.
Also present in court were Kirk's parents, Robert W. Kirk and Kathryn Kirk, as well as Donald Trump Jr., son of US President Donald Trump.
Before the session began, Kirk's family issued a joint statement describing the legal process as emotionally taxing. "Every court proceeding painfully reminds us of Charlie's death and the loss that has permanently changed our lives and the lives of his children," the statement read.
The 31-year-old Kirk was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, while speaking on the campus of Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback tour. He served as founder and leader of Turning Point USA and was a close ally of President Trump.
During Monday's hearing, prosecutors presented new surveillance footage and witness testimony. According to Utah State Bureau of Investigation detective David Hull, security videos show Robinson on campus four times on the day of the shooting: twice before the incident, during the shooting itself, and again later that evening.
The prosecution also showed a video in which, they claim, Robinson can be seen parking his vehicle near the campus before the shooting and leaving the area afterward.
Among the first witnesses was law enforcement officer Chris Bagley. He testified that traces found near the shooting scene indicated the shooter had lain on a rooftop in a sniper-like position. Bagley added that surveillance video shows a person leaving the rooftop after the shooting.
The defense, meanwhile, challenged the interpretation of the surveillance footage, the identification of the suspect, and the security arrangements at the event. Robinson's attorneys have also previously called for the removal of the death penalty as a possible sentence.
The week-long preliminary hearing will determine whether the case proceeds to a full trial.
