Six Found Dead in New York Home, Grandmother Suspected of Poisoning Family
Officers in Mechanicville, New York, found six bodies inside a family apartment after worried neighbors called for a welfare check. Authorities believe a 64-year-old woman killed her daughter and four grandchildren by poisoning them, then ended her own life.
The victims were identified as 44-year-old Sarah Myers and her four children: 13-year-old Harper, 11-year-old Hudson, and ten-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn. Police chief William Rabbitt confirmed their identities. The sixth body belonged to Myers's mother, 64-year-old Amy Steadman.
Initial findings suggest all six died from poisoning. Investigators suspect Steadman administered tablets to the victims. She allegedly left behind a handwritten farewell note, and additional evidence points toward murder followed by suicide, according to police.
Officers arrived at the Myers residence on Tuesday after neighbors reported not seeing any family members for several days. All six had been deceased for some time, though Rabbitt did not specify for how long.
The children were homeschooled. The children's father, Brady Harmon, spoke to television station WNYT from Salt Lake City. He said he last saw the children in person in November 2019 and had since been trying to obtain custody or at least visitation rights. He had been granted a visit and was scheduled to see them in the coming days.
The motive for the multiple killings remains unknown.
