Federal investigators have determined that three ransom messages connected to the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie were fabricated, according to a report from the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) based on FBI documents.

Guthrie, mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, vanished on January 31. In the weeks that followed, her family received three separate communications claiming she had been kidnapped. One of the messages reportedly stated that the elderly woman had died after being abducted and was "buried with nature." Another demanded payment in cryptocurrency.

The FBI deposited a small amount of digital currency as part of the investigation, but no one collected the funds. A federal law enforcement source confirmed that none of the three ransom notes were genuine.

The development casts significant doubt on the theory that Guthrie was kidnapped. Her daughter made an emotional public appeal on the Today Show, saying "somebody knows something" and describing the family's anguish over the new information.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the disappearance. The case remains open.
