Former Florida gubernatorial nominee arrested after traffic stop in Daphne

Andrew Demetric Gillum, the 2018 Democratic nominee for governor of Florida and former mayor of Tallahassee, was arrested last week on drug charges in Daphne, Alabama, fox10tv.com reports.

According to the Daphne Police Department, officers pulled over Gillum, 46, at around 10:45 p.m. on Thursday on U.S. 98 near N. Main Street following observations of erratic driving.

During the stop, an officer spotted a glass pipe on the centre console of the vehicle. That observation provided probable cause for a full search of the car, police said.

Officers recovered several rolled marijuana cigarettes and three packages of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Gillum was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, and second-degree possession of marijuana, a class A misdemeanor. He was booked into the Daphne City Jail and subsequently transferred to the Baldwin County Correctional Facility, before being released the following Friday.

In the 2018 Florida gubernatorial election, Gillum narrowly lost to Republican Ron DeSantis in the general election.
