Four Family Members Charged After 16 Children Rescued from Ohio Home
Law enforcement officers in Vinton County, Ohio, removed 16 minors from a residence in Hamden after discovering them in conditions described as far beyond acceptable. Four relatives now face multiple felony counts.
The suspects were identified as 73-year-old Gary Sanders, 67-year-old Christina Sanders, 36-year-old Gary Sanders II, and 33-year-old Elizabeth Sanders. Each has pleaded not guilty to 16 second-degree felony charges of endangering children. Bond for each defendant was set at $300,000.
The children ranged in age from a year and a half to 18 years. Seven required hospital treatment, with two airlifted by helicopter. One child remained in critical condition.
Vinton County Prosecutor William Arther clarified that the matter involves a domestic situation rather than human trafficking. The accused include the grandmother, grandfather, father, and mother.
Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson stated that the circumstances were "beyond any imagination." He added that had authorities delayed action by even another day, one or more fatalities among the children would have been highly probable.
The family had resided in Vinton County for the past four years, continuously relocating to keep the minors hidden from authorities. None of the children were enrolled in school. The 18-year-old is included in the charges due to developmental characteristics associated with a minor.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain characterized the dwelling as "disgusting," noting human waste and extremely confined space. He remarked that most animals live in better conditions than these children endured.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called the case "tragic," expressing heartbreak over the children's living conditions and health status while thanking responders for their rescue efforts.
