Georgetown son charged with father's murder, case sent to grand jury

A 22-year-old Georgetown man accused of shooting his father to death waived his preliminary hearing in a brief court appearance Tuesday, lex18.com reports.

Johnathon "Hunter" Mullins faces charges of murder (domestic violence) and assault in connection with the May 22 death of his father, James Mullins. Police say Hunter Mullins shot his father at a residence on Hutchins Drive, where James Mullins was found lying in his bed.

Hunter Mullins also allegedly stabbed his uncle, who attempted to restrain him after spotting a gun in his hands, according to a police citation. Georgetown police have not disclosed a possible motive for the killing.

At Tuesday's hearing, Hunter Mullins' attorney waived the preliminary hearing, forwarding the case to a Scott County grand jury for potential indictment. The defense attorney declined to comment.

James Mullins had been a longtime employee of Pat Juett Heating and Air Conditioning in Georgetown. His death left family members, colleagues, and customers in grief. "He treated everyone with such kindness, and every day we had compliments coming in on the service he provided," the company stated on its Facebook page. Customers also shared memories on the company's social media about how helpful Mullins had been over the years.
