A Memphis-area woman is in custody facing murder accusations after a toddler died under her care, WDBJ7 reports.

Twenty-nine-year-old Dominica Mosby faces accusations of first-degree murder alongside charges of aggravated mistreatment and neglect of a minor.

The tragedy unfolded last weekend when the victim's father arrived at a home and found his three-year-old son lifeless. He immediately contacted emergency responders, but the child could not be revived.

Initially, Mosby—who was romantically involved with the father—claimed she had tucked the sick youngster into bed. Under questioning by homicide detectives, she changed her story and described acts of cruelty she had carried out. She said she pressed a lit cigarette against the toddler's ear and his private area after he had an accident on the floor. She further acknowledged that she had struck and stomped on the small boy's chest and midsection repeatedly when he would not listen to her.

The county medical examiner classified the death as homicide. A post-mortem examination showed the child had sustained a torn liver, stomach hemorrhaging, torso contusions, and thermal injuries on his ear and genital region.

Investigators also spoke with the boy's aunt, who indicated she had seen wounds on him on earlier occasions.

Mosby is jailed with no bail set while awaiting further proceedings.
