Police in Memphis, Tennessee have arrested a woman accused of killing a toddler through brutal physical assault.

Dominica Mosby, aged 29, is accused of first-degree murder, aggravated abuse of a minor, and aggravated neglect, WSFA reports based on court filings.

The tragedy unfolded last weekend when the victim's father returned to find the 3-year-old boy lifeless. He dialed emergency services immediately, but responders could only confirm the child had already passed away.

Mosby, who was dating the father, first claimed she had settled the sick youngster into bed. Under later questioning by detectives, she reversed her story and acknowledged carrying out violent acts against the small child.

She reportedly owned up to pressing a burning cigarette against the boy's ear and his private area because he had soiled the floor. She also confessed to repeatedly punching and stepping on his upper body when he would not comply with her demands.

The coroner determined the manner of death was homicide. Post-mortem examination showed the victim had suffered a torn liver, bleeding inside the abdomen, marks across the trunk, and thermal injuries on the ear and groin.

A relative of the child told authorities she had spotted wounds on the boy in the past.

Mosby is jailed without bail as she waits for further proceedings.
