State attorneys in Utah have formally requested capital punishment for a 23-year-old man implicated in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The demand came during the opening session of a week-long preliminary hearing aimed at establishing whether sufficient grounds exist to bring the defendant, Tyler Robinson, before a jury on murder charges.

Kirk was shot on September 10, 2025, while addressing students at Utah Valley University, located roughly 65 kilometers south of Salt Lake City. The 31-year-old political commentator, who co-founded the youth-focused organization Turning Point USA, had been credited with mobilizing young conservative voters during President Donald Trump's successful 2024 re-election campaign.

On Monday, Utah State Bureau of Investigation agent David Hull took the stand and identified Robinson as the individual under investigation. Hull explained that detectives pieced together the suspect's route on the day of the killing using security camera recordings, after Robinson contacted police to indicate he was prepared to surrender.

According to Hull's testimony, the footage captured Robinson appearing on the university grounds on four separate occasions: twice before the gunfire erupted, once during the incident itself, and once afterward. Investigators were able to connect Robinson to a silver Dodge Challenger after running the vehicle's registration data.

The victim's widow, Erika Kirk, attended the session alongside several relatives. The family exited the courtroom before prosecutors screened video clips of the shooting recorded by bystanders, a professional videographer, and surveillance systems. The gathering marked the first time Erika Kirk occupied the same room as Robinson, whom authorities believe drove approximately four hours from Washington city to carry out the attack. Members of Robinson's family were also seated in the gallery, as was Donald Trump Jr.
