ICE agent fatally shoots Mexican national in Houston

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a Mexican national in Houston on Tuesday after the man allegedly resisted arrest and tried to run over an officer, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security cited by MTI.

Officials said the man failed to stop when ordered and attempted to drive into an ICE agent, prompting the agent to open fire in self-defence. The Mexican citizen was targeted because he was residing in the United States without valid documentation.

The victim's son told reporters his father had been working at a construction site and was on his way to work when ICE officers stopped him. He died after being taken to hospital.

Democratic officials and civil-rights advocates are demanding an independent investigation into the shooting.

The incident marks at least the eighth ICE operation in which federal immigration officers have fatally wounded a targeted individual.
