A 44-year-old man was gunned down by a fellow employee on the grounds of a food company in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. The shooting took place around 8:15 p.m. on Friday.
The victim was identified as Joel Enrique Santiago Moreno. He sustained a bullet wound to the left side of his chest and died at approximately 10:20 p.m. while receiving medical care at Aibonito's Menonite Hospital.
Lieutenant Luis Rivas Jimenez, assistant director of the Aibonito Criminal Investigations Corps, confirmed the details of the case. He stated that the alleged shooter is being held at the Aibonito Police District pending formal charges.
Rivas Jimenez could not confirm whether there had been prior conflicts between Santiago Moreno and the suspect. "We don't have that information at this time," he said. He also declined to reveal whether an argument or physical fight occurred between the two workers before the killing, explaining that such details could compromise subsequent legal proceedings.
Authorities did confirm that they have surveillance footage from the crime scene and nearby areas under review. "We are continuing with interviews and gathering video from the establishment," the lieutenant explained.
The Aibonito CIC is leading the investigation. Prosecutor Maria Varas will be responsible for filing charges against the detainee once police complete their work.
This homicide was one of five murders recorded from Friday night through Saturday morning. With these killings, the island's murder tally for the year rose to 186.
