A 24-year-old Minneapolis man has been charged with first-degree assault following a shooting on Nicollet Mall that left two people with gunshot wounds, fox9.com reports. The incident occurred on May 29 near Ninth Street and Nicollet Mall.

Talib Romeo Taylor-Bey Jr. faces charges of first-degree assault causing bodily harm and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, filed in Hennepin County Court. He has admitted to the shooting after being read his rights, according to the criminal complaint.

Officers responding to a report of gunfire found two victims at the scene. One was shot in the upper right chest and thigh, had to be sedated, and was rushed into surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center. The second victim, a 44-year-old man employed by a nearby business, was struck by gunfire as well. Police described him as an "innocent bystander." He remained alert and was able to speak with officers at the scene.

During a news conference Friday afternoon, police said investigators determined that a 25-year-old man had been meeting with Taylor-Bey Jr. when the encounter escalated into gunfire.

Following the shooting, officers tracked Taylor-Bey Jr. to an apartment in the 1600 block of 1st Avenue South. A perimeter was established and police called for the suspect to surrender. He was taken into custody without further incident. Investigators subsequently obtained a warrant to search the apartment, where they recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

Witnesses and surveillance video also identified Taylor-Bey Jr. as the shooter, the complaint states.

If convicted on the most serious charge, Taylor-Bey Jr. faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $30,000. Police say the investigation is ongoing, with medical records still under review.
