One dead in Maine shooting involving ICE agents
A fatal shooting occurred in Biddeford, Maine, where one person was killed in an incident involving agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The event comes only days after another deadly shooting by an ICE agent in Houston, Texas, where a Mexican driver lost his life during a traffic stop.
According to a Facebook post by Ryan Fecteau, president of the state House of Representatives, the shooting took place in the morning in Biddeford. "This morning there were shots fired in Biddeford. One person was killed. ICE was involved. State police and the Department of Public Safety are now on the scene gathering details and are also awaiting an FBI investigation," Fecteau wrote.
Local news outlets reported that authorities closed off a road and FBI officers were assisting local law enforcement at the scene. Biddeford is a city of over 21,000 residents, located 15 miles south of Portland and 90 miles north of Boston.
The Biddeford police department made no comment and referred inquiries to ICE, while the mayor did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Neither ICE officials nor the Department of Homeland Security were immediately available for comment.
The previous week, an ICE agent fatally shot a man in Houston identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araucho as officers attempted to stop his vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Araucho, who was presented as a Mexican national in the U.S. illegally, tried to evade arrest during an ICE operation.
These shootings come amid an escalating federal crackdown on migrants at the national level, with the Houston incident sparking protests.
