Memphis Woman Shoots Tow Truck Worker During Lincoln Repossession, Faces Assault Charge

Memphis Woman Opens Fire on Tow Truck Driver During Car Repossession

A 26-year-old Memphis woman shot a tow truck worker in the shoulder after her vehicle was being repossessed early Wednesday morning, Law & Crime reports. Iysha Chapman now faces an aggravated assault charge and is being held in Shelby County jail on a $150,000 bond.

According to an affidavit of complaint, two workers from a towing and recovery company had received a repossession order for a 2015 Lincoln MKC. Around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, they drove to a home on Treadwell Street in Memphis, where Chapman was staying.

When the men arrived, Chapman came outside and asked to retrieve personal items from the vehicle. The workers allowed her to do so and told her to contact the lien holder to resolve the matter. When one of the workers then asked her to return the keys, she refused, reportedly stating, "you all will have to drag it."

The worker got back into the tow truck and prepared to proceed with the repossession. While seated inside the cab, he heard Chapman say, "I will kill you." She then allegedly fired a single shot that struck his co-worker — who was standing outside the truck — in the shoulder. The injured worker climbed into the truck, and both men drove away before calling 911.

Memphis Police Department officers responded to the Treadwell Street address and spoke with Chapman at the scene. She told officers she had missed a car payment on Monday but believed she had a five-day grace period. Chapman said she tried to jump into the vehicle and drive away, but one of the tow truck drivers physically pushed her back from the door.

Feeling "helpless," she recounted, she reached into her purse, pulled out a firearm, and fired the shot that struck the man in the shoulder.

Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant and seized a teal .380 Glock from the scene; the weapon still had five live rounds in the magazine. During a photo lineup of six individuals, the wounded tow truck worker positively identified Chapman as the shooter.

Chapman was arrested and booked into jail. She is expected to appear in court on Monday.
