Third death linked to ICE operations in days: Mexican man killed during chase in Florida
A Mexican man lost his life during an immigration enforcement operation near St. Augustine, Florida, on Tuesday. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at a gas station close to the tourist city when the man, along with three other individuals, abandoned their vehicle and attempted to escape arrest.
During the pursuit, the man was hit by a passing semi-truck and died instantly. The other three passengers also fled the scene.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the deceased was a Mexican national but did not officially name the agency involved. However, Florida Highway Patrol clarified that agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as well as investigators from the Department of Homeland Security, participated in the operation.
The exact circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
This marks at least the third death connected to ICE operations within a matter of days. Last week, an ICE agent shot and killed a Mexican father of five in Houston, Texas. Earlier this week, a 26-year-old Colombian migrant also died in Biddeford, Maine, in what reports suggest may have been a case of mistaken identity.
The series of incidents has intensified criticism against ICE and the mass deportation policies implemented by the Trump administration. The agency's operations, which frequently involve heavily armed agents with covered faces, have drawn sharp condemnation from human rights organizations and segments of the public, who allege excessive use of force and aggressive tactics during migrant arrests.
Pressure on federal authorities has grown further following the earlier deaths of two American citizens, René Goud and Alex Pretti, in Minneapolis this year, as well as the release of video footage that challenged the official account of those cases.
