Independence Day festivities turned violent Saturday night in North Charleston, South Carolina, as local authorities were forced to intervene in chaos that included assaults on officers.

Police received reports of gunfire at a Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood block party. Witnesses also reported revelers shooting fireworks at passing vehicles.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and disperse the crowd safely. However, multiple fights broke out and additional shots were fired at the scene.

Police tried to separate those involved in the brawls. During the disorder, several officers were assaulted, and two female officers sustained minor injuries.

Three juveniles and one adult were arrested at the location. Authorities also seized multiple firearms and one homemade spear.

The city's police department emphasized in a statement that attacks on law enforcement cannot be tolerated and those responsible will be held accountable.
