A juror in the federal arson trial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of igniting what became the Palisades Fire, delivered a blunt verdict on the government's performance — calling the entire proceeding "bulls–t," NY Post Metro reports.
Juror #4, identified as Bryana from Lompoc, California, told The California Post that prosecutors failed to make a convincing case and wasted the jury's time.
"It's disappointing because of how much money and time they put into the same thing. I don't know … but like, yeah, bullsh–t," she said.
Bryana described a growing sense of confusion as the trial progressed. "I really felt like, 'What are we doing here?' a lot of times," she said. "You're supposed to be presenting this case to me to convict that man, and I felt like, 'No, that doesn't make sense. Like, what?' Like, you're making me feel like he's more and more innocent with each fact."
Foreman answers 'no' across the board
Jurors were summoned to a Los Angeles federal courtroom Friday, where the judge posed a series of questions to the foreman about the jury's deadlock: whether jurors could agree, whether additional court assistance would help, and whether a verdict remained possible if deliberations continued. The foreman answered no to all three questions.
A mistrial was declared. The final split stood at two jurors in favor of conviction and ten in favor of acquittal. Rinderknecht showed little emotion as the decision was read. He will remain in custody.
Essayli vows retrial
Bill Essayli, Los Angeles's top federal prosecutor, moved quickly to announce a second attempt. "The evidence is strong that Jonathan Rinderknecht is responsible for igniting the fire on January 1, 2025, which eventually became the Palisades fire," Essayli posted on X. "We fully intend to retry this case before a new jury and obtain guilty verdicts on all charged counts."
Juror: defendant was no 'loner'
Bryana pushed back on the portrait prosecutors had drawn of Rinderknecht as an isolated figure. "I went in knowing I felt like with the evidence he was not guilty," she said, adding that she saw him as a "regular, troubled person" rather than the loner the government described.
She also offered praise for defense attorney Steve Haney, noting his "bougie" wardrobe and crediting him with laying out the case clearly. "He pointed out great points to like make you understand. Yeah, I think he's awesome," she said.
The Palisades Fire, which prosecutors allege Rinderknecht started on January 1, 2025, became one of the most destructive blazes in the region's recent history. With a retrial now confirmed, a new jury will be seated to weigh the same charges.
