An American filmmaker will spend two and a half years behind bars after a federal judge convicted him of pocketing $11 million from Netflix. The money had been allocated to wrap up a television project called White Horse, yet the director funneled the cash into his private accounts and used it to fund a lavish lifestyle, according to The Guardian.

Court records show that Carl Rinsch told the streaming platform he needed the eight-figure sum to complete filming. Once the payment arrived, however, he redirected it to himself. The misappropriated funds went toward acquiring premium vehicles, expensive timepieces, apparel, and various home goods. One particularly eye-catching transaction involved over half a million dollars dropped on a pair of mattresses.

At 48, Rinsch stood before the court alongside his attorneys and attributed his behavior to psychological difficulties and complications from prescribed drugs. He expressed remorse, conceded that genuine harm had resulted from his deeds, and admitted he had not grasped how serious his state had become.

The prosecution pushed for a much stiffer penalty of five years. They argued that the accused had grown up with privilege, attended top schools, moved in celebrity circles, and built a thriving professional life, making pure avarice the only plausible explanation for his conduct.

Presiding Judge Jed S. Rakoff accepted that emotional wellbeing challenges might account for certain extreme choices, but stressed they did not weaken the conclusion that Rinsch had willfully misled the entertainment company to extract a large financial payout.

Professionally known also as Carl Erik Rinsch, the defendant launched his creative journey as an adolescent in greater Los Angeles by producing short movies. He transitioned into advertising before breaking into features with the 2013 release 47 Ronin, headlined by Keanu Reeves, who later voiced support for him during the criminal case.

The show that triggered the entire affair remains unfinished to this day.
