Police in Kansas City continued their search through Thursday (18/6) for a man suspected in a string of armed attacks on highways, including an assault on an Uber driver transporting soccer fans to the Argentina–Algeria World Cup match on Tuesday night (16/6).

The shootings, which left one person dead and four others wounded, unfolded over roughly 30 minutes along the Interstate 670 and Interstate 70 freeways, with officers responding to multiple locations across the city.

A group of Argentina fans told the Argentine newspaper La Nacion that they came under fire while riding in an Uber toward the stadium. "The car was moving when another vehicle pulled up and fired twice at it," one of the fans recounted.

A passenger said the driver immediately stopped the vehicle, and only then did they realize someone had been shot. "He hit the brakes and I saw his foot. The man had a hole from the bullet," the fan said. "We called the police. It was terrifying."

Authorities clarified there is no indication the attack was connected to the specific match or the World Cup tournament. Police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, warning that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Shortly after the shootings, officers traced the suspect to a residence in the nearby city of Independence, Missouri, leading to a prolonged police standoff at the house. During the operation, a fire broke out inside the residence, and when police later entered the building, they found no one inside.

"We are very close to tracking this individual down and we want to ensure he is apprehended as soon as possible," stated Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves during a press interview.

The attacks occurred just ten days after another shooting incident in which nine people sustained minor injuries, roughly four miles from the England national team's base in Kansas City for the World Cup.
