Karmelo Anthony's Defense Seeks New Trial and Judge in Frisco Track Meet Murder Case
Attorneys representing Karmelo Anthony have submitted multiple motions in Collin County court as they work to overturn his murder conviction for the deadly stabbing of Austin Metcalf during a 2025 Frisco ISD track competition.
The defense filings, submitted on Tuesday, call for both a fresh trial and the assignment of a new jurist to oversee the appellate proceedings. These legal maneuvers represent the first significant steps by Anthony's recently assembled counsel since the teenager was found guilty.
The case drew widespread attention after Metcalf, also a student-athlete, was fatally wounded in an altercation at the outdoor sporting event in Frisco, Texas. Prosecutors argued that Anthony deliberately attacked the victim with a blade, leading to his death at the scene.
The jury's guilty verdict and subsequent sentencing sparked debate across the region about youth violence, school safety, and the circumstances that led to the confrontation between the two teenagers.
With the new motions now before the court, the appellate process will determine whether procedural or evidentiary issues during the original proceedings warrant a different outcome. A hearing on the defense requests has not yet been scheduled.
