Over the months since the abduction, law enforcement received multiple communications allegedly sent by the perpetrators. The most recent message claimed that Guthrie had been killed. Federal investigators have now determined that these communications were not authentic.

Guthrie is the daughter of well-known television presenter Savannah Guthrie.
