The assailant, who reportedly suffered from mental health problems, pulled two large knives from a bag and began threatening passersby in the busy tourist district in broad daylight. She then attacked the two victims.

Police responded to the scene and opened fire, fatally striking the woman. One of the people she stabbed died from their injuries. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.

The incident disrupted the famous Manhattan intersection, which draws heavy crowds of tourists and commuters.
