Employee shot dead at Lansing paint facility, gunman still at large

A worker was killed in a shooting at Nippon Paint Automotive Americas in Lansing, Illinois. Police lifted a shelter-in-place order but the suspect remains at large.

A male employee was shot and killed inside the Nippon Paint Automotive Americas facility on the 2700 block of 170th Street in south suburban Lansing on Thursday afternoon, cbsnews.com reports. The shooting occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m., directly across the street from the Lansing Police Department.

Officers arriving at the scene found one man dead from a gunshot wound. The shooter had already fled before police arrived.

Lansing Police Chief Al Phillips said authorities had searched the surrounding area thoroughly. "We've exhausted all leads at this time, and believe the subject is not in the area," Phillips said.

The facility houses four buildings and employs more than 200 staff, some of whom witnessed the shooting. Whether the suspect was also an employee has not been confirmed; the victim, however, was a member of staff.

Police initially ordered nearby schools and residents to shelter in place while the search was under way. That order has since been lifted, though the investigation remained active Thursday afternoon.

Approximately 100 officers took part in the search, supported by a drone unit and a K-9 team.

The suspect is described as a Black man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black durag, a black hoodie, and a white surgical mask, and was observed running south on 170th Street.

Anyone who spots the suspect is asked to call 911 immediately.
