Deputies responded at 6:30 p.m. to a reported domestic disturbance, during which a man was assaulting a woman. Officers from a neighbouring agency confronted both individuals at the scene.
The pair then fled into nearby woods. Shortly after, what was believed to be a gunshot was heard in the area. Multiple agencies deployed additional units and launched a systematic search of the surrounding woodland. As of the 9 p.m. update, neither individual had been located.
The suspects are described as a white male wearing a red Adidas shirt, blue jeans, and a ball cap, and a white woman with red hair wearing a blue sweatshirt. The large police presence was centred around Brooklyn Road and Madison Street in the Fairlawn area of the county.
The sheriff's office is urging residents in the area to remain inside and lock their doors. Anyone who spots either individual is instructed not to approach them and to call 911 immediately.
