Attorneys representing the young man charged with gunning down UnitedHealthcare's top executive in New York City have abandoned plans to argue he suffered from a disturbed mental condition during the act.

The 28-year-old defendant, who faces both federal and state charges, insists he did not commit the crime. Prosecutors allege he shot Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old insurance company leader, in the back as Thompson walked to a business meeting at a Manhattan hotel in early December 2024.

The reversal by the suspect's counsel came barely twenty-four hours after they had informed the presiding judge of their intent to demonstrate their client experienced an acute psychological crisis at the moment of the homicide. The about-face occurred just ahead of a Thursday cutoff for turning over medical and psychological records to prosecutors.

Pursuing the emotional disturbance angle could have reduced the charge from murder to manslaughter, carrying a lighter custodial sentence. Yet it would also have forced an implicit admission that the defendant caused the victim's death, even if under duress.

This tactic stands apart from a full insanity plea, which aims for complete exoneration and institutionalization in a secure medical facility rather than a penal sentence.

The accused appeared before the bench on Wednesday while the judge referenced the now-discarded defense approach. Another procedural session is fixed for mid-August, with jury selection for the state-level case slated to commence in early September.

Law enforcement detained the suspect several days after Thompson's death. He was apprehended inside a fast-food restaurant on a Monday following the fatal ambush.
