Luigi Mangione Returns to Court for Pretrial Hearing in CEO Murder Case
Luigi Mangione, the man facing state and federal charges for the 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, appeared in court Wednesday for a key pretrial hearing.
Mangione was arrested in December 2024 at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a nationwide manhunt. Prosecutors allege he shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024.
He is charged with second-degree murder under New York state law and also faces federal charges that could carry the death penalty. The federal case accuses him of stalking and using a firearm in a murder.
Wednesday's hearing in state court addressed procedural matters ahead of trial. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the state charges.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with some supporters raising funds for his legal defense.
