A man in his late sixties is being held on a homicide charge after a fatal altercation involving a sharp weapon in Pompano Beach, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

The fatal confrontation occurred near 7 p.m. Tuesday along East Atlantic Boulevard, specifically around the 2500 block. First responders from the Broward Sheriff's Office and emergency medical services reached the location to discover a male suffering from several deep lacerations caused by a knife.

The injured party was rushed to Broward Health North Hospital, where medical staff were unable to save him. His name has not been released pending formal identification.

Investigators named David Rice, age 67, as the person responsible for the violence. Rice had departed the scene before deputies arrived, but officers managed to track him down and place him under arrest within a short period.

Law enforcement believes the two individuals were previously familiar with each other, though the specific circumstances that led to the deadly encounter remain under active investigation.

Rice was transported to a correctional facility where he was processed on a charge of first-degree murder.
