Authorities in North Carolina have detained an individual they believe carried out a knife attack that left one person dead near Charlotte's city center.

The violence erupted early on June 10 at a multi-unit dwelling situated off West Trade Street, close to Interstate 77. Emergency crews arrived shortly before 6:45 a.m. and located a 27-year-old male in an outdoor parking space. He had suffered penetrating wounds and was pronounced deceased at the location.

Eight days afterward, on June 18, detectives arrested 51-year-old David Layevette Lawrence. He now faces counts of killing another person and committing theft while armed. Legal paperwork suggests the accused may have seized the deceased's cellular telephone during the confrontation.

Records show the accused lived within the same housing complex where the bloodshed took place. After being booked, he was confined at the county lockup and slated for an initial court appearance on June 19.
