Washington State Felon Faces Federal Firearm Charge After Border Agent Shooting
A 39-year-old from Everson, Washington, who is legally barred from owning guns, was taken into custody following a violent clash with a U.S. Border Patrol officer at the Peace Arch frontier crossing between Washington and British Columbia.
Nathanial A. Muniz-Spry was slated to appear before a Seattle federal magistrate on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Court papers filed by prosecutors in the Western District of Washington accuse him of carrying a firearm despite his status as a convicted felon.
The episode occurred Tuesday morning at Peace Arch Park in Blaine, Wash., situated directly along the international line. During the encounter, a border agent discharged his duty weapon, striking Muniz-Spry. The wounded man received hospital treatment. A weapon was later found at the location.
Municipal police in Blaine used Instagram to reassure residents that no broader danger existed. The FBI has assumed control of the criminal inquiry, while the agency's Office of Professional Responsibility is separately examining whether the agent's decision to open fire was justified.
