Isaac Smith, 30, of Pennsylvania has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder of Karli Short, 26, who was five months pregnant at the time of her death, according to court records reviewed by Law & Crime.

Smith was also convicted of first-degree murder of an unborn child. Short was shot in the head on the morning of Sept. 13, 2021, outside her home on Furnace Alley in McKeesport — a city roughly 12 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Short had been in a romantic relationship with Smith, though he described the involvement as limited to only a few encounters. In the days before her death, Short had reached out to Smith asking for money and texting him about a gender-reveal party she had planned — a party that was scheduled just two days later.

Smith, however, was dating a new girlfriend at the time, and she had met his parents only days before the shooting. Allegheny County Deputy District Attorney Ryan Kiray said Smith had a "clear motive" — he did not want the double life he was living to be exposed. "The walls were closing in," Kiray said.

On the morning of the shooting, Short's uncle was inside the home when he heard her on the phone. "Are you coming to the front or the back?" he recalled her asking before she stepped outside. Moments later, he heard a gunshot. Prosecutors argued Smith had lured Short into the yard before killing her.

Hours after the shooting, Smith walked into Allegheny County Police Department headquarters and submitted to a three-hour interview, telling investigators he wanted to clear his name. He acknowledged having been intimate with Short and stated he was willing to be present in the child's life. Detectives initially found him credible, Law & Crime previously reported, but grew skeptical as the investigation deepened and his relationship with the new girlfriend came to light.

In a development noted during sentencing, DNA evidence established that Smith was not the biological father of Short's unborn child — a fact her own father highlighted as he addressed the court.

"My grandchild was not murdered by her father," Brandon Short said. "Her father did not kill her. A murdering coward did."

Short's aunt described how much her niece had looked forward to becoming a mother. "That was her joy; that was her moment," she said, per local ABC affiliate WTAE, before addressing Smith directly. "Having to sit in the same room with him is devastating. It's unimaginable."
