A 38-year-old Texas man called 911 on Monday morning to report finding his father dead — then was charged with being the one who killed him, Law & Crime reports. Justin Blount now faces a murder charge as well as credit or debit card abuse against an elderly individual in connection with the death of his 81-year-old father, James Raymond Blount.

Deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded around 8 a.m. to a home on Trails End Road in Conroe — the county seat of Montgomery County, roughly 40 miles north of Houston — where Justin Blount had reported finding his father unresponsive. Investigators found James Blount suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene.

As the investigation progressed, detectives determined that Justin Blount had used his father's credit cards without authorisation. The sheriff's office said evidence ultimately pointed to the son not only as the unauthorised user of the victim's financial accounts, but as the person responsible for the killing itself. Authorities did not specify what physical evidence tied him to the shooting.

Justin Blount was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on Monday. Jail records reviewed by Law & Crime confirm both charges against him.

Friends remembered James "Mr Jim" Blount as a devoted horseman and a pillar of his community. "This is truly a remarkable man that we lost," Linda Young, a friend of the victim, told Houston NBC affiliate KPRC. "Jim was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. He would give you the shirt off his back. To have this kind of insanity done to him is just shocking."
