Mason City man held for murder after woman found dead at residence

A 75-year-old Mason City man has been charged with first-degree murder following a traffic stop on Saturday morning, kttc.com reports.

At approximately 10:38 a.m., Mason City Police officers were dispatched to a residence in northeast Mason City after receiving a welfare check request for a female resident. Upon arrival, officers found the woman unresponsive. Medics subsequently pronounced her deceased, and her age has not yet been disclosed.

Investigators determined the woman did not die from natural causes.

At 11:14 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop in southwest Mason City and detained the driver, Steven Stotts, 75, who reportedly resided at the same address where the woman was found. Stotts was initially designated a "person of interest" before police formally charged him with first-degree murder. He was transported to the Cerro Gordo County Jail, where he remains held.
