Massapequa man killed in his sleep; acquaintance found hiding in the home

A 28-year-old man was stabbed in the neck while sleeping in the basement of his parents' home on Beaumont Avenue in Massapequa, Long Island, and died in his father's arms, abc7ny.com reports.

Nassau police identified the suspect as Kristin Sculley, 22, also a Massapequa resident, who was described as an "acquaintance" of the victim. Friends and family named the victim as Bobby Carragher.

"We believe the suspect in this case became angry towards our victim and stabbed him in the neck while he lay sleeping in bed," Nassau Det. Lt. George Darienzo said. Carragher climbed the stairs calling for help, and his parents attempted to control the bleeding in the kitchen before he became unresponsive.

He "died in his father's arms," Darienzo said. "No family should ever have to bear witness to their son being killed in that manner."

Sculley was later found hiding in the lower level of the house. Police recovered a pocketknife they believe to be the murder weapon.

She was charged with second-degree murder, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in jail. Her family declined to comment on leaving the courthouse.

Darienzo confirmed that Carragher and Sculley had known each other "for several years" and were friends, though it was not clear whether they had a romantic relationship. Police did not disclose a motive.

When asked whether drugs played a role, Darienzo said there was "evidence that there may have been some drug use" but that no drugs were found in the home at the time.

Carragher had no criminal record.

"There's not much you can say. An innocent life was taken. Bobby lit up every room he walked into," friend Louis Ambrosio said. "It's disturbing that the room I hung out with my friend, he was murdered in his sleep — it's just not right."
