A gunman shot at least one person dead and wounded eleven others in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning. He then holed up inside a building, where a standoff with police was still in progress, according to city officials and the NBC News channel.

Officers rushed to the 4600 block of West Wall Street after receiving an active shooter alert. When they reached the location, they could still hear shots ringing out from inside the structure. Emergency crews promptly began removing the wounded from the scene.

Midland Memorial Hospital confirmed that ambulances brought nine casualties to its facility. Surgeons had to operate on four of them right away because of serious bullet injuries. Five additional patients were in stable condition.

Law enforcement sealed off the site and cleared nearby neighborhoods. Yet the barricaded attacker remained inside, the city of Midland said in a Facebook update.

At a news briefing, Mayor Lori Blong expressed solidarity with those affected. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones," she stated. The mayor explained that officers had thrown a tight cordon around the property and had the assailant surrounded, meaning local residents were no longer facing direct peril. Tactical units and several cooperating agencies were on the ground.

Blong cautioned that no verified facts about who the shooter was or who the casualties were could yet be disclosed. Early indications point to the violence starting in the southeast of the city, then the perpetrator traveling southward while discharging his weapon, until he finally locked himself inside the structure.

City administrators asked people to stay away from the vicinity. "We will share further details as soon as we have them," the municipality posted on X.
